Column guide

Total Cloud Cover (CT) The combined fraction of sky covered by all cloud layers. A quick single-number summary: 0 % = clear sky, 100 % = overcast. Source=ICON
Low Clouds (CL) Clouds below ~2 km. The most problematic for eclipse viewing — thick low cloud completely blocks the Sun. Source=ICON
Mid Clouds (CM) Clouds between ~2 km and 6 km. Can thin or thicken during the day; mid-level cloud often diffuses sunlight rather than blocking it entirely. Source=ICON
High Clouds (CH) Thin ice-crystal clouds above ~6 km (cirrus). Usually semi-transparent; they reduce contrast and corona visibility but rarely prevent naked-eye totality. Source=ICON
Atmospheric Instability (CAPE) Convective Available Potential Energy — a measure of thunderstorm potential. High values (red/orange) mean a risk of afternoon convective clouds or storms. Source=ICON @14:00
Convective Rain Precipitation from showers and thunderstorms during the day. Even isolated convective cells near the eclipse path can cause last-minute obstruction. Source=ICON
Line of Sight A composite clarity index combining low, mid and high cloud fractions into one view of the sun at the altitude of the eclipse. Transparent = clear view of the Sun; dark = obstructed. Source=Besselian Elements Team
Forecast Stability How much the cloud-cover outlook has shifted between the last consecutive model runs. A stable, converged forecast (low change) can be trusted; an unstable one still has significant run-to-run spread and should be treated with caution. Source=Besselian Elements Team
Synthetic Convection RGB (ICON-EU) Forecast convective-risk composite built from ICON-EU synthetic Meteosat channel simulations (R = WV6.2 − IR10.8 thermal difference, G = IR10.8 cloud-top temperature inverted, B = htop_dc deep-convection height). Orange/red = active deep convection; yellow = growing cumulus; white/grey = thin cirrus; dark blue = warm dry surface. Valid at any forecast lead time. Source=ICON-EU
